Commercial Egg Factory's Treatment of Hens |
 |
Most of Henny Penny's female cousins end up in a
commercial egg factory. The living conditions for these unfortunate chicks are appalling.
Each factory has thousands chickens in battery cages. |
| These hens never see the light of day. They
never taste green grass. They never scratch the dirt. Their environment is carefully
controlled with one goal in mind; the most amount of eggs in the least amount of time in
the least amount of space. |
| Chicken Food |
|
| From birth until death, these chickens must
be fed a steady diet of antibiotics. Though in a "sterile" environment, (they
have no direct contact with humans), they are prone to all sorts of infections. Their poop
creates a fecal dust that they breath, making respiratory infections a constant threat. |
| Debeaking |
|
| In this unhappy environment, the chickens
will peck each other causing injury and even death. In order to combat this problem, the
commercial farmers have to debeak the chickens. This is typically done at 1 day and 7
weeks old. It is very painful to the hens. They cut off the end of the upper beaks with a
hot knife. |

The Henspa
Advantage |
| The Henspa hen is a healthy hen. She requires no antibiotics, only laying mash.
Some Henspa owners like to use an organic supplement. Our organic laying mash supplement
is specially formulated to give the free-range hen an extra dose of vitamins and minerals.
|
| Because she is happy, she needs no debeaking. In fact, she will use her beak to
peck grass, weeds, straw, bugs, and other natural outdoor things that chickens like. While
it is natural for hens to peck each other, and establish a pecking order, it should rarely
result in serious injury. Her pecking order is secure since there are never more than 12
hens in a Henspa. |
| Her environment is fresh every day. Since you move the
Henspa daily, the poop never builds up and makes a mess. The fresh air takes care of any
"fecal dust," which is highly unlikely anyhow. |
